Google Website Optimizer
January 15th, 2010

Google has a tool that will allow web designers to try different designs, versions or content of their website to gain a solid idea of what is most effective.  Website designers can create different designs for pages and add them to Google Website Optimizer which will automatically distribute users to the differently designed pages.  Google will then offer statistics on which pages were successful and how many ‘goals’ converted.

Secondly, once you have established which design layout works the best, you can experiment with various text content and images in the same way to see which variation gains the most of what you want to achieve.  This will really help web designers isolate the message for the sites they create and help you realise what your users want from your site.

This is valuable information for website designers as it gives real data as to what works and what doesn’t. Click here to see for yourself.

Google Maps Navigation
November 4th, 2009

Google have announced the next step for Google Maps will be for the mobile user: Google Maps Navigation (Beta) for Android 2.0 devices.

Web designers have been using Google Maps for a long time to embed maps of the locatons of businesses and offices.

A GPS navigation system that will include 3D views, turn-by-turn voice guidance and automatic rerouting. But unlike most navigation systems, Google Maps Navigation was built from scratch, taking advantage of mobile phone’s Internet connection.

There are seven big features that are possible due to internet connectivty:

The most recent map and business data as it can be automatically updated in real-time.

Search in plain English, rather than postcodes, addresses or street names.  Google has to pwer to do this.

Search by voice using your mobile phone

Traffic view with live traffic data over the Internet.

Search along route for a particular business or services that is close by in Plain English.

Satellite view using the same satellite imagery as Google Maps

Street View using the same system as Google Maps

The first phone to have Google Maps Navigation and Android 2.0 is the Droid from Verizon and will initially be available only in the US and like other Google software, Navigation will be free.

Watch out TomTom!

Google Fast Flip
October 26th, 2009

Google Labs presents its latest experiment Fast Flip.

Fast Flip aims to combine the traditional elements of flipping through recent news articles, headlines and popular topics. Flipping through articles is very fast with use of horizontal sliding panels. At the same time it allows sharing content with friends and community, alongside personalising the experience by taking cues from what articles you browsed.

Google believes Fast Flip has a role in providing solutions to today’s challenges in the publishing industry.
